We are using the "standard" manufacturing module, with "a couple" of customizations for our customers. You must define the "master" as an ítem, the formula as a "Production BOM", and simplify the Routings, etc.
It really depends on the complexity of the manufacturing process you have,... I personally love the standard manufacturing functionality ;-)
